The Sunday Coast Byron Rug

A scratchy towel over damp grass or gritty sand is a sad excuse for a comfortable base at camp or the beach.

The Sunday Coast sent us a Byron Rug to try, and it's earned a permanent spot in the back of the car. Inspired by Byron Bay's coast and community, it's a large, tightly woven rug with a signature tiled pattern in warm golden hues on one side and a vibrant ocean blue on the other — so you get two completely different looks from the one rug.

What makes it genuinely useful is the versatility. At an extra-large 200 x 160cm it comfortably seats four, and the tight weave creates a real barrier against sand, grass and dirt rather than letting it all soak through. We've used it as a beach rug, a picnic blanket, a campfire throw over cool evenings, and even a tapestry back at home — it pulls off all of them.

100% recycled cotton

Woven from recycled cotton off-cuts to keep textile waste out of landfill — soft and cosy to sit or lie on, without the plastic feel of synthetic picnic mats.

Reversible two-sided design

Golden tiled pattern on one face, ocean blue on the other. Flip it to match the mood — warm and earthy for the van, cool and fresh for a summer beach day.

Extra-large, seats four

At 200 x 160cm it spans a double bed or fits a picnic of four, yet the tight weave still packs down and shakes out clean of sand and grass.

Machine washable

Shake off sand and dirt, spot-clean small marks, or run it through a cold delicate cycle and air dry — a genuine advantage over rugs you're scared to get dirty.

Our final opinion

The Byron Rug is one of those bits of kit that quietly does everything. It looks far more premium than a standard picnic blanket, the recycled-cotton weave is comfortable and durable, and the reversible design means it never feels out of place whether it's on the sand, at camp, or thrown over the couch.

It's designed in Australia and machine washable, which for us seals it — a good-looking rug you'll actually use hard and not stress about. If you want one blanket that covers beach days, picnics, van life and campfire nights, this is an easy recommendation.
